Simple Tomato Kurma Recipe for Idli | Easy Thakkali Kurma
Tomato Kurma or Thakkali Kurma is one of the easy yet delicious recipes that can be made in a jiffy. This recipe best suits any breakfast recipe like Idli, puri, dosa and chapati.
Our version of kurma is South Indian style which loves to eat chutneys and kurma with their breakfast recipes. This can be made with minimal kitchen ingredients available in many houses.
Our titles themselves say that Tomato is our main ingredient, onions, dry coconut powder and other spices add flavor to our recipe. Tomato Kurma not only goes well with the breakfast recipe but also tastes great with vegetable biryani or steamed rice.

TIPS to make Tomato Kurma Recipe or Thakkali Kurma:
- Spice powder gives authentic flavor so, while dry roasting you can either put all ingredients one by one or roast them separately.
- We can substitute fresh coconut with a dry version. Both have their unique flavors.
- Try to add ripe tomatoes to this recipe as they give good flavor.
- If you want creamy flavor, add coconut milk but adding more may give it a sweet flavor.
- As we are adding both green chillies and red chilli powder adjust the spiciness as per your taste.
- If your children like to have a soft and creamy recipe, we can make tomato puree.
- We can even add cashew paste to give a creamy flavor.

Tomato Kurma Recipe | Thakkali Kurma

Ingredients
- Tomatoes – 1 bowl.
- Onions – ½ bowl
- Cinnamon sticks – 3 No.
- Cloves – 3 No.
- Green cardamoms – 2 No.
- Dry coconut – ½ cup
- Oil – 4 tbsp.
- Mustard seeds – ¼ tbsp.
- Chana dal – ¼ tbsp.
- Cumin seeds – ½ tbsp.
- Green chillies – 6 No.
- Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp.
- Curry leaves – 2 tbsp.
- Salt – ½ tbsp.
- Turmeric powder – ½ tbsp.
- Curd – 1 cup
- Red chilli powder – 1 ¼ tbsp.
- Water – required qty.
- Coriander powder – 1 tbsp.
- Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp.
Instructions
- For Thakkali Kurma recipe, masala or spice powder plays an important role so let’s prepare spice powder first.
- In a pan add dry coconut, cinnamon sticks, green cardamoms and cloves.
- Put them at an interval of 10-20 seconds as they might get burnt. Dry roast them and keep aside.
- In a pan heat 4 tbsp. oil and add chana dal, cumin and mustard seeds.
- Once mustard seeds start spluttering add onions and green chillies.
- When onions turn translucent, add ginger garlic paste and sauté for a while.
- Add curry leaves, turmeric powder and tomatoes. Mix well and cover the pan with a lid.
- Cook for 10 minutes till tomatoes turn soft.
- Open the lid, stir and put coconut paste, yogurt, water and red chilli powder. Mix well and cook for a minute on low flame.
- Once dry roast spices are cooled, transfer them into a mixer grinder and make soft-paste by adding little water.
- Put this spice paste in the tomato mixture. Stir and cook on low flame for 10 minutes with lid covered.
- During this period of cooking, tomatoes absorb the flavors of spices.
- At the end of the recipe, sprinkle coriander powder and mix well.
- Coriander powder acts as a mild thickening agent so if you want thick gravy for chapati or puri to leave it as it is or else add little more water while adding spice paste.
- Garnish Tomato kurma recipe with coriander leaves and serve hot with breakfast recipes.

How to make Tomato Kurma or Thakkali Kurma Recipe:
1. Dry roast cinnamon sticks, cloves, green cardamoms and dry coconut on a pan.
2. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, chana dal and cumin seeds.
3. Add sliced onions, slit green chillies and ginger garlic paste. Saute for a while till its raw flavor is cooked.
4. Put curry leaves, sliced tomatoes, salt and turmeric powder.
5. Mix all ingredients and cook for 10 minutes with the lid covered.
6. Pour coconut paste, curd, red chilli powder and little water.
6. Meanwhile, add roasted dry coconut spices in a mixer grinder and grind to a coarse paste, if needed add a little water to make it a soft paste.
7. Mix well and cook for 10 minutes so that the tomato absorbs spices with the lid covered.
8. Sprinkle 1 tbsp. coriander powder and 2 tbsp. coriander leaves.
9. Serve the Tomato Kurma Recipe hot. It tastes great either with chapatti or with steamed rice.
