Sweet Appalu Recipe | Bellam Appalu Recipe is one of the sweet delicacies which is soft from the inside and has mid crunchy flavor from the outside. This recipe is made as naivedyam during festivals or offered as prasadam to Lord Hanuman.
It is said that when we make a garland with this recipe and offer it to Lord Hanuman, we will be blessed with good fortune. As this is a sweet recipe, Indians offer this recipe even during Vinakaya Chavithi and Varalakshmi Vratam pooja.
TIPS to make perfect Sweet Appalu | Bellam Appalu Recipe:
- The ratio of rice flour and wheat flour must be in equal proportion.
- People who want to make use of sugar can lower the quantity of jaggery as per sugar
- As we are making use of jaggery, it’s a good idea to filter once it melts.
- Adding ghee and cardamom powder will enhance the flavor of this recipe.
- Once appalu are deep-fried, press them with two skillets with mild pressure to remove excess oil.
- As we are adding wheat flour this recipe must be deep-fried at a low flame as there is a chance of getting dark output before they are cooked from inside.

Sweet Appalu | Bellam Appalu is one of the sweet delicacies which is soft from the inside and has mid crunchy flavor from the outside. This recipe is made as naivedyam during festivals or offered as prasadam to Lord Hanuman.
Ingredients
- Rice flour – ½ cup
- Wheat flour – ½ cup
- Cardamom powder – ¼ tbsp.
- Water – 1 cup
- Jaggery – 1 cup
- Ghee – 1 tbsp.
Instructions
- In a pan add jaggery and little water. Melt and filter foreign particles.
- While jaggery melts let’s prepare flour mix, In a mixing bowl add equal portions of wheat and rice flour.
- Add cardamom powder, mix. Put this flour in the above jaggery syrup and stir continuously.
- Cook on low flame and make a thick lump of dough. Add ghee to get a soft texture.
- Off the flame and let this batter cool. Meanwhile, heat oil in a pan to deep fry the sweet appalu recipe.
- When the oil is ready, stake a small portion of dough by greasing your hands.
- Make disk shape by pressing dough and gently release them in oil.
- Similarly, make a few more and deep fry on low flame by frying on both sides.
- As Bellam appalu absorbs more oil, press them gently using two colanders and drain excess oil.

How to make Sweet Appalu or Bellam Appalu Recipe:
1. In a bowl, add rice flour, wheat flour and cardamom powder and mix and keep aside.
2. Pour water into a pan and add jaggery. Let the jaggery melt and bring it to a boil.
3. Add flour mix and stir continuously so that there are no lumps. Cook on low flame.
4. Put 1 tbsp. ghee and mix well to get a soft and nonsticky dough.
5. Grease your hands and take a small portion of dough mix.
6. Heat oil in a pan and put appalu one by one and deep fry on low to medium flame.
7. Once they turn their color, flip to the other side and deep fry.
8. Using a colander and a spoon, press sweet appalu recipe and remove excess oil.
