Chana dal is one of the staple ingredients which is available in almost every Indian kitchen. As we all know Bengal gram is fully loaded with protein, it is the best food for toddlers and children.
Coconut Chana Dal Curry can be served with chapatti or bhatura recipe as an alternative to aloo curry or some other chutneys. As this is a dry version, red chilly gives you spicy taste.
While making Senagapappu Kobbari Curry, I choose coconut grated because it gives you instant energy and is good for diabetic people as it helps in improving insulin secretion and proper utilization of blood glucose.
Whenever there is a special occasion Indians have a habit of breaking a coconut and offer it to the deity. Most of the time we use coconut either for making coconut chutney or use a fresh grate for increasing the flavour of the recipe.
If you do not have any curries or in short of vegetables then coconut and chana dal combination will give your super taste. Coconut Chana Dal Curry tastes great either with steam rice or with chapati.
Tips to make perfect Senagapappu Kobbari Curry:
- If you have time, soak chana dal before cooking, to reduce cooking time.
- When chana dal is cooked, they break into two pieces when pressed with fingers.
- We can add fresh coconut grate or we can simply crush them in a mixer grinder.
- Usually, this recipe tastes great with chapati when cooked to dry.

Senagapappu KobbariCurry | Coconut Chana Dal Curry is one of the simple and amazing recipes from Andhra Cuisine.
Ingredients
- Chana dal – 1 cup
- Fresh coconut – 1 cup
- Water – 1 glass
- Oil – 2 tbsp.
- Mustard seeds – ¼ tbsp.
- Cumin seeds – ½ tbsp.
- Onions – 1 cup
- Garlic – 12 No. crushed
- Green chillies – 3 No.
- Tomatoes – ½ cup
- Turmeric powder – ¼ tbsp.
- Salt – 1 tbsp.
- Water – 200 ml.
- Red chilli powder – ¾ tbsp.
- Coriander powder – ½ tbsp.
- Garam masala powder – ½ tbsp.
- Coriander leaves – 1 tbsp.
Instructions
- Clean and boil chana dal by adding 1 glass full water either in a pressure cooker or with the lid covered.
- Add little oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, garlic, green chillies and onions. Saute for a while.
- Either grate fresh coconut or crush them to powder and cook for a while.
- Put salt and turmeric powder, mix and cook for a while with lid covered.
- Add chana dal along with its stock, red chilli powder and little water.
- Cook Coconut Chana Dal Curry till coconut is cooked and it becomes dry.
- Sprinkle garam masala powder, coriander powder and its leaves.
Mix Senagapappu Kobbari Curry and serve hot either with steam rice or with chapati.

How to make Senagapappu Kobbari Curry:
1. Clean chana dal and pour 1 glass full water and cook with lid covered till they turn soft.
2. Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and onions.
3. Add crushed garlic cloves and slit green chillies and sauté for a while.
4. Take fresh coconut pieces and put them in a mixer grinder. Crush to fine pieces and add it to the above curry. Cook for a while.
5. Put tomatoes, turmeric powder and salt. Mix and cook for a minute with lid covered.
6. Add chana dal along with its stock and mix well.
7. Pour little water, red chilli powder and mix well. Cook Coconut Chana Dal Curry for a minute or two till water evaporates.
8. Sprinkle coriander powder, garam masala powder and coriander leaves. Mix and serve Senagapappu Kobbari Curry hot.
