Aratikaya Kura can be made in two different styles one is our way and the other is a dry version. People who are looking to make a dry version can boil bananas separately and then season with spices.
It is one of the easy recipes a bachelor can make with just two bananas and with fewer ingredients. This recipe goes well either with chapati or with steamed rice.
As this is one of the protein-rich foods, it this become one of the favorites of vegetarians. When making a dry version, we can even make a paste of it and season it with spices.
Tips to make perfect Raw Banana Curry:
- If you are making a dry version of this recipe then we need to cook raw bananas separately or else they do not cook evenly.
- Peel and put bananas or their slices in salt water so that they do not turn black.
- When cooking raw bananas with the lid covered, cook on low flame and stir for every 30 seconds as they stick to the bottom and may get burnt.
- If you are making a dry version of this curry then add dry coconut powder to elevate its flavor.

Raw Banana Curry is one of the simple South Indian style recipes which can be served either with steam rice or with Indian bread.
Ingredients
- Raw Banana – 2 No.
- Oil – 3 tbsp.
- Mustard seeds – ¼ tbsp.
- Cumin seeds – ½ tbsp.
- Chana dal – 1 tbsp.
- Garlic cloves – 10 No.
- Green chilly – 1 No.
- Onions – 1 bowl
- Salt – 1 ½ tbsp.
- Curry leaves – 2 tbsp.
- Tomatoes – 1 cup
- Turmeric powder – ½ tbsp.
- Red chilli powder – 1 tbsp.
- Coriander leaves – 1 tbsp.
- Water – 1 – 1 ¼ glass
- Coriander powder – 1 tbsp.
Instructions
- Add a little salt to the water and keep it aside.
- Peel raw bananas and put them in saltwater. Make small pieces and again put them in saltwater so that they do not turn black.
- In a pan add little oil and put chana dal, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, green chillies, garlic cloves and onions.
- Add curry leaves and sprinkle a pinch of salt so that onions turn soft.
- Put tomatoes, turmeric powder and salt as per your taste and cook for a minute with lid covered.
- Once tomatoes become soft add raw bananas and mix all ingredients.
- Cook for 5-10 minutes on low flame with lid covered.
- Once raw bananas are semi cooked sprinkle red chilli powder, pour little water and cook further with lid covered.
When Aratikaya Kura is ready, sprinkle coriander powder and mix well.
Garnish the raw banana curry with coriander leaves and serve hot.

How to make the raw banana curry:
1. Peel and slice raw bananas into small pieces as shown in the picture below.
2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and chana dal.
3. Add crushed garlic cloves, green chilly pieces, onions and a pinch of salt so that the onions cook fast.
4. Put curry leaves, tomatoes, turmeric powder and 1 ½ tbsp. salt.
5. Close the lid and cook for a minute or two so that the tomatoes turn soft.
6. Add raw banana pieces, mix and cook for 10 minutes with the lid covered.
7. Open the lid, sprinkle red chilli powder, pour water, and mix. Cook for 5 minutes with the lid covered.
8. When the raw banana curry is done, sprinkle coriander powder and garnish with coriander leaves.
