Mudda Pappu Recipe | Andhra Mudda Pappu
Mudda Pappu Recipe is one of the South Indian Andhra Recipe usually made with Tur dal (kandhi pappu in Telugu) or red gram lentil.
It is one of the protein-rich recipes, no Andhra thali is complete without this recipe. Andhra people believe that Mudda Pappu recipe and avakai pacchadi (mango pickle) is the best combination.
I have seen many people like to add one spoon of ghee along with this combination as it enhances the flavor of this recipe. Preparation of Andhra Mudda Pappu is very simple and needs very fewer ingredients.
From many years Andhra people feed their child with this recipe combined with ghee to grow their child mass as its rich in protein and its natural food.
The secret behind adding ghee with this dal recipe is protein need the little amount of fat to get digested.
In South India, never Andhra thali is fulfilled without this recipe in it. Usually, there will be rice, dal, pickle, curd, papad etc.
Andhra people like to have nutritious food so they include min 2-3 varieties of curries and at last, have curd to digest easily.

Ingredients
- Yellow lentils/ kandipappu – 1 cup
- Water – 2 bowls
- Green chillies – 5 No.
- Turmeric powder – ¼ tbsp.
- Oil – 1 tbsp.
- Garlic cloves – 6 No. crushed
- Curry leaves – 1 tbsp.
- Salt – ½ tbsp.
- Tempering Ingredients:
- Ghee – 1 tbsp.
- Mustard seeds – ¼ tbsp.
- Cumin seeds – ¼ tbsp.
- Garlic cloves – 4 No. crushed
- Dry red chillies – 2 No.
- Curry leaves – 1 tbsp.
Instructions
- In a pressure add 1 cup kandipappu and clean by adding little water.
- Add 2 cups of water and add green chillies, curry leaves, turmeric powder and little oil.
- Pressure cook on high flame for first whistle blow and next 2 whistles on low flame.
- Usually, good quality dal turns soft for 3 whistles, if not mash dal using dal masher by adding little salt.
- Transfer this paste to a serving bowl and keep aside.
- In a small vessel, heat ghee and add mustard and cumin seeds, red chillies, garlic cloves and curry leaves.
- Sauté for a while and pour over Andhra mudda pappu recipe and serve with hot steamed rice.
How to make Mudda Pappu Recipe:
1. Put 1 cup yellow lentils in a pressure cooker and clean it. Add 2 bowls of water for each cup of dal.
2. Add green chillies, turmeric powder, oil and 1 tbsp. curry leaves. Pressure cook for 3 whistle blows.
3. Mash dal and add ½ tbsp. salt. Mix well and keep aside.
4. In another vessel, add ghee. Once it melts add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and garlic cloves.
5. Add dry red chillies and curry leaves.
6. Sauté for a second and put temper over mudda pappu recipe.
