Kadambam Recipe Temple Style | Kadamba Sadam for Navratri
Kadambam Recipe or Kadamba Sadam or simply sambar rice is one of the healthy nutrition filled South Indian recipes. It is usually made with mixed vegetables, lentils, rice and a blend of spices or simply sambar powder.
Kadamba Sadam is from Kerala people don’t like to add onions to this recipe. As per our tradition, during the festive season of Navratri, it is made with fresh country vegetables and offered as naivedyam to goddess Durga.
As we add lentils and mixed vegetables, it is rich in protein and nutrients, if you like you can even add brown rice or even millet. Although it takes time to prepare, it’s worth spending time. We can make it juicy or hard as per our taste.

Ingredients
- Ingredients: 1 bowl = 200 ml
- 1 bowl Yellow Lentil/ Kandipappu
- Water Required
- ½ tbsp. Turmeric powder – ½ tbsp.
- Oil Required
- Tamarind – fist full
- 3 tbsp. Ghee
- ½ tbsp. Mustard seeds
- ½ tbsp. Cumin seeds
- 4 No. Green Chillies
- 1 tbsp. Curry Leaves
- 4 No. Dry red chillies
- Asafoetida – A pinch
- 1 bowl Onions
- 1 bowl Bottle Gourd
- 1 bowl Drum sticks
- 1 bowl Curry Cucumber/ sorakaya
- 1 bowl Lady finger/ okra/ bendakaya
- ½ bowl Carrot sliced into round pieces
- ½ tbsp. Tindora/ dondakaya
- ½ bowl Potato
- 7 No. Indian broad beans
- ½ bowl Tomato
- 2 tbsp. Salt
- 1 tbsp. Red chilli powder
- 1 tbsp. Jaggery
- 1½ tbsp. Sambar powder
- 1 large bowl Cooked rice
- 2 tbsp. Coriander leaves
Instructions
- Clean yellow lentils and pour three bowls of water and pressure cook for 3 whistle blows.
- Tip: Adding little oil and a pinch of turmeric powder while cooking dal makes it soft.
- Soak tamarind and extract its pulp, keep it aside.
- Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, dry red chillies, green chillies and curry leaves.
- Sprinkle asafetida, onions, curry cucumber, bottle gourd, ladyfinger, drum sticks, tindora, carrot, Indian broad beans, potato slices, tomato and any leftover veggies and mix well.
- Sprinkle little turmeric powder and salt, mix and cook further for 10 minutes.
- Once dal is cooked, mash it to soft and transfer it to above veggies.
- Add jaggery, tamarind pulp, red chilli powder and water.
- Sprinkle little sambar powder and mix well.
- Once you get a thick consistency, add rice and mix well.
- Cover the vessel with a lid and cook further of a minute or two.
Once it's cooked, serve Kadambam Recipe into a serving bowl and garnish with coriander leaves.

How to make Kadambam Recipe:
- Add yellow lentils to a pressure cooker and add adequate water to clean the dal.
- Pour three bowls of water into the dal, sprinkle a pinch of turmeric powder and 1 tbsp. oil.
Tip: While cooking dal, adding turmeric powder and oil will make dal cook faster and smoother.
- Add tamarind to a bowl and pour a little water and let it soak for 5-10 minutes and extract pulp out of it.
- Put 3 tbsp. ghee in a pan and heat to its melting point.
- Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, green chillies and curry leaves.
- Remove the tips of dry red chillies, add and sauté for a second.
- Sprinkle a pinch of asafetida and mix all ingredients.
- Now it’s time to add veggies, add sliced onions, bottle gourd, drum sticks and curry cucumber.
- Add ladyfinger, carrot, tindora and potato slices.
- Continue adding Indian broad beans and tomato slices, mix all ingredients gently.
- Add 1 tbsp. salt and ½ tbsp. turmeric powder and mix all ingredients.
- Cover with the lid and cook for 10 minutes on low heat.
- On another side, remove the lid of the pressure cooker and mash the dal to a soft texture.
- Transfer the dal into a small bowl and keep aside.
- Remove the lid and mix all ingredients to check whether they are well cooked or not.
- Add mashed dal and tamarind pulp and mix all together.
- Sprinkle red chilli powder and jaggery and mix well.
- If you feel that the mixture is a bit thick add 250 ml. water and cook for a minute.
- Sprinkle sambar powder and mix well.
Note: Adding sambar powder will make the mixture thick and consistent.
- Add cooked rice and mix well.
- Cover the vessel with a lid and cook for 2 minutes so that the rice absorbs flavour.
- Once it’s cooked transfer to a serving bowl.
- Garnish Kadambam Rice Recipe with coriander leaves and serve hot.
