Garam Masala Powder | Homemade Garam Masala powder Recipe
Garam masala powder is a blend of toasted aromatic spices. This can be called an Indian magic ingredient which enhances the taste of the recipe. You find this magic ingredient in almost all north Indian dishes. Garam masala powder is found in almost all general stores and in many variants. But my version is more aromatic and of course very fresh.
As part of the diet, we eat different foods, but when they get habitat our family members like to eat tasty food. That is the reason why we tend to eat food outside whether it is a snack or meals. That is when spice powder come to existence, we can make garam masala as per our taste buds.
Many of us tend to purchase spice powder in petty shops either branded or normal packs, but it is very easy to make. All you need to know the quantity or proportion of spices needed to be added to blend. Homemade garam masala powder recipe is very easy to make when you especially pick spices of good quality and roast them and blend them you get superior quality than any branded packs.
Tips to make perfect Homemade Garam Masala Powder:
- Try to purchase good quality spices which are free from insects.
- Although we dry roast all ingredients, it’s a good idea to sundry.
- We may add or remove a few ingredients as per your taste and health conditions.
- Do not roast ingredients on high temperatures; they need to be roasted on low flame either individual or mixed.
- When roasted in mixed form, ingredients that have high heat resistance need to be roasted first (in short ingredients which take time to get roasted may be added first) and then goes lower resistance.
- To increase the shelf life of this recipe, keep out of moisture and water.
- We can also put in a refrigerator to increase its shelf life once packed in an air-tight container.
Garam Masala Powder, Homemade Garam Masala powder Recipe
Ingredients
- Cinnamon sticks – 3 tbsp.
- Cloves – 1 ½ tbsp.
- Black pepper – 2 tbsp.
- Green cardamom – 10 No.
- Star Anise – 2 No.
- Coriander seeds – ½ cup 5 tbsp.
- Cumin/ Jeera–1 ½ tbsp.
- Sayajeera – 1 tbsp.
- Bay leaf – 4 No.
Instructions
How to Make Garam Masala Powder:
In a pan dry roast cinnamon sticks, black pepper, cloves, green cardamoms, coriander seeds, star anise, sayajeera, bay leaf and cumin seeds.
Roast the above mixture occasionally until they turn their respective colors.
Tip: You will notice aromatic smell out of the roast or roast for 5 minutes. whichever is convenient.
Note: Please do not raise the heat to save your time. By doing so you may burn the spices and the taste will change.
Once the spices are roasted perfectly, let them cool completely.
Grind the above mixture to a fine powder.
You can use immediately or store in an airtight container.
Garam masala powder preserved in an airtight container and kept in dry condition can remain for about 3 months

Although this recipe is homemade it has a shelf life. So It’s a good idea to use before expiry to get an authentic flavor.
How to make Garam Masala powder:
- In a pan dry roast cinnamon sticks, cloves, black pepper and green cardamoms.
- Add star anise (break the leaves), coriander seeds, cumin/ jeera and sayajeera.
- Continue adding a bay leaf and transfer to another plate to cool all ingredients.
- Transfer all above ingredients to a blender and blend to a fine powder.
- Store Garam masala powder in an airtight container so that the aroma and flavours are locked.
