Andhra Style Drumstick Masala Curry | Rich Munakkada Masala
Drumstick masala Curry or Munakkada Masala Curry is a rich gravy recipe made with a blend of spices, dry coconut, onion paste and tomato puree.
This version of the recipe is vegetarian (moringa) and not chicken drumsticks, recipes made with drumsticks are rich in nutrients and good for health. As per research, all parts of this veggie are useful to cure many diseases.
Such is the versatile vegetable that can be used in making vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian recipes. Sometimes we can make special dishes like Drumstick masala curry or use in making sambar, used as an added ingredient in making potato or brinjal curries.

TIPS to make perfect Andhra Drumstick Masala Curry:
- When making masala, poppy seeds get burnt fast so add them at last and remove them from the pan once they turn their colour.
- Tender drumsticks give good flavour to our recipe.
- Take care while cooking as sticks tend to break or split when overcooked.
- If you are not using tender sticks then try to boil them separately and then add to our recipe as they take time to cook.

Drumstick masala Curry or Munakkada Masala Curry is a rich gravy recipe made with a blend of spices, dry coconut, onion paste and tomato puree.
Ingredients
- Drum sticks – 2 Whole size.
- Cumin seeds – ½ tbsp.
- Coriander seeds – 1 tbsp.
- Poppy seeds – 2 tbsp.
- Oil – 3 tbsp.
- Cinnamon sticks – 3 no.
- Cloves – 7 No.
- Green cardamoms – 4 no. Crushed
- Sayajeera – ½ tbsp.
- Onion paste – 1 small bowl.
- Water – required quantity
- Dry coconut – 1 small bowl.
- Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp.
- Green chillies – 5 No.
- Curry leaves – 2 tbsp.
- Tomato puree – 1 cup.
- Turmeric powder – ½ tbsp.
- Salt – 1 tbsp.
- Red chilli powder – 1 tbsp.
- Garam masala powder – ½ tbsp.
Instructions
- First let us make masala paste, roast coriander and cumin seeds then add poppy seeds and roast till they turn their colour.
- Transfer them to another bowl and let them cool before blend.
- In a pan, heat oil and add cinnamon sticks, green cardamom, sayajeera, cloves and onion paste.
- Cook all ingredients on low flame till onions turn its colour.
- On another side, once spices are cooled, add them to a blender and add dry coconut and blend to smooth paste by adding little water. Keep aside.
- Put ginger garlic paste to onion paste (blend onions to smooth paste) and sauté for a while.
- Add green chillies and tomato puree (blend tomato to smooth paste).
- Sprinkle salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder, mix well.
- Add drumsticks and masala paste, mix well.
- Pour little water and cook for 5 minutes with lid covered.
- Once drumsticks turn soft, add garam masala powder and mix all ingredients.
- Garnish Drumstick masala curry or munakkada masala curry with coriander leaves.

How to make Drumstick Masala Curry:
- Roast cumin seeds and coriander seeds on low heat.
- Add poppy seeds along with the above spices and roast further for a few seconds.
Tip: Poppy seeds get burnt fast, so add them at last and remove them once they turn their colour.
- Transfer spices into another bowl and let them cool.
- Heat oil in a pan, add cinnamon sticks, cloves and green cardamoms.
- Add sayajeera and onion paste, sauté for a while.
- Meanwhile, let’s make masala paste, add roasted ingredients in the blender and blend coarsely.
- Put the dry coconut and a little water to make a smooth paste.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a while till it loses its raw flavour.
- Slit green chillies into two half’s and make tomato puree and add both of them.
- Add turmeric powder, salt, red chilli powder and mix all ingredients.
- Slightly remove the skin of drumsticks, cut them into small pieces and put them in the masala paste.
- Mix well and add blender cleaned masala paste water and a little more water to make gravy.
- Cook for 5 minutes till drum sticks become soft with lid covered.
- Sprinkle garam masala powder and mix well.
- Garnish Munakkada Masala curry or drumstick masala curry with coriander leaves and serve hot.
