Usually, if we want beetroot to cook like a potato then we can slice it into small cubes or else we can cook for 5-10 minutes and remove from stove. Beetroot curry south Indian Style is one of the versatile veggies that can be eaten fully cooked or half-cooked.
Few people even make this recipe by grating but by doing so its moisture is lost when we cook for a long time so we need to cook for not more than 5 minutes. This recipe goes well with Indian bread like chapatti.
Maybe because of its colour or sweet flavour, recipes made with beetroots are my favourite. My mother used to feed me saying “eating beetroot will fill your body with blood”. I used to think that blood is made from beetroot. How innocence is my childhood. J
Preparing Beetroot Curry Recipe:
As Beetroots are from the legume family, they need to be cleaned properly. This is a vegetable with many nutrients with fewer calories so we need to peel thin.
As said earlier this veggie has many nutrients, this should not be cooked for a long time although it takes time to cook.
So we need to slice them into small cubes or thin pieces like French fries. If we grate then this recipe turns mushy.
Making beetroot curry recipe:
It is one of the easy recipes, we roast spices in oil and then add onions and chillies. Then add beets and is cooked on low to medium flame till they become soft.
Sprinkle spice powders as per your taste and then garnished with coriander leaves. People who like to have it creamy can cook beets in coconut milk.
TIPS to make the perfect Beetroot Curry Recipe:
- Usually, beetroot takes time to cook so cook for 15-20 minutes with lid covered. If you want to save time you can cook separately and add them.
- If we cook separately we need to use stock or else we may lose its nutritional value.
- This recipe stays fresh for the whole day as we do not add any water to it.
- When we cook this recipe with the lid covered, moisture in beetroot helps in cooking.
- Although we cook with the lid covered, stir for every 5 minutes or else the base may get burnt.
- As this curry is a dry version, it goes well with chapatti or can be served as a side dish along with Tomato Rasam.
- To add additional flavor we have added sesame seed powder. We can substitute with groundnut powder if we do not have sesame seeds with you.

Ingredients
- Beetroot – 250 gms.
- Oil – 4 tbsp.
- Mustard seeds – ¼ tbsp.
- Cumin seeds/ Jeera – ½ tbsp.
- Chana dal – ½ tbsp.
- Onions – ½ bowl 2 large size
- Green chillies – 3 No.
- Curry leaves – 2 tbsp.
- Salt – 1 tbsp.
- Turmeric powder – ¼ tbsp.
- Red chilli powder – ¼ tbsp.
- Sesame powder – 1 tbsp.
- Coriander powder – ½ tbsp.
- Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp.
Instructions
- Peel beetroots and cut them into small cubes and keep aside.
- Prepare onions by slicing into small pieces and slice green chilles, keep aside.
- On a pan, heat oil and add chana dal, mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Saute for a while.
- Add onions, chopped green chillies and curry leaves.
- Mix and add beetroots and again mix. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 10 minutes.
- Sprinkle turmeric powder, salt (as per your taste) and cook till pieces are soft.
- When you feel a recipe is almost cooked, sprinkle sesame powder, coriander powder and chilli powder ( adjust as per your spiciness as we have already added green chillies).
Mix well and garnish Beetroot Curry with coriander leaves and serve hot with steam rice or with Indian bread.

How to make Beetroot Curry Recipe:
1. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, jeera and chana dal. Fry them for a second.
2. When mustard seeds start spluttering, put medium sliced onions, green chillies and curry leaves. Saute for a while.
3. Add finely sliced beetroot, mix and cook for 10 minutes with lid covered.
4. Sprinkle salt (adjust as per your taste), turmeric powder and mix. Cook further for 5-10 minutes till pieces get cooked.
5. Add red chilli powder, sesame powder and coriander powder. Mix well and garnish with coriander leaves.
6. As our version of Beetroot curry is dry, it tastes great with chapatti or with steamed rice.
